How to Choose an Aviary for Your Pet Birds

Many people love their pet birds and it’s easy to see why. They are beautiful, provide a magnificent atmosphere with their chirpy song and have a calming, but cheeky nature which makes them fun to watch and enjoy.

Birds can make great pets indeed however, as much pleasure as they provide you, you need to provide them with a comfortable and well designed aviary, so they can be happy.

BUT before buying a pet bird or a new aviary for your feathered friends, make sure you follow these steps below to ensure you are choosing the right home for your birds.

Step 1 Type of Bird

Consider carefully the type of bird you want or research your current pet birds to find out what type of a habitat is most suitable for their needs. For example,

  • What is the full wing span and are they a very active breed?
  • Will you be taking the bird out of the aviary and have them spend time outside with you?
  • Will their wings be clipped, if so how will they get around the aviary?

You need to consider how many you will have to ensure there is enough room for them to happily live alongside one another. Most often you will need more than one because birds like companions.

As you can see you need to carefully consider the bird itself before deciding on a home for them.

Step 2 Size & Shape

Once you have decided on the type of bird and their requirements you can move onto finding the right bird aviary to suit their needs.

You can't have your pet birds live cramped up. Allow enough space for your birds to be able to move around and fly. The ideal size of an aviary will depend on the size and number of birds you have.

Bird aviaries can come in many shapes and sizes such as the following designs:

They have different roof types, colours and different heights.

They also come in different materials. You can choose from a steel aviary or a timber, it depends on personal preference.

Step 3 Location & Weather

Where you place your pet birds aviary is an important decision as well. You have to make sure that the location will keep them safe from the elements. Choose a location where your feathered friends will be sheltered from:

  • Direct sunlight
  • Harsh winds and
  • Heavy rain.

You also want to choose a place where you can enjoy them and spend time with them. Hiding them in a far corner will isolate them from the family and you won't be able to enjoy their company. Birds are also very social and will bond with you if you spend time with them.

Lastly, you need to consider what space you actually have available in your home before buying the aviary.

Step 4 Security

Ensure you anchor the aviary to the ground when you have installed it because the last thing you want is the birds and their home being knocked down or ripped apart in a bad storm. It would be very tragic, so please avoid this by securing the aviary to the ground/concrete slab.

Ensure the mesh is made of quality material, so it cannot be easily damaged. Also, arrange for a padlock to be used on the gate when you leave the home. Bird theft is not unusual. so take that extra step to keep them safe from harm.

Step 5 Extras

Lastly, you need to consider what to include in the interior. Making sure your pet bird has everything it needs to Iive a healthy and safe life.

Items we recommend are:

  • Bird feeders
  • Perches
  • Nestboxes
  • Toys (mirrors and balls).

Which toys and nests you require will come down to the type of birds you wish to welcome into your home. Do your research and prepare before you introduce them into their new home.

There you have it! By following these steps you will be sure to choose and prepare the right home for your bird family.
